- IV. DESCRIPTIONS
-
- These Additions perform a number of useful and instructive functions ranging
- from providing information about your publication and its stories to
- automatically numbering paragraphs. We suggest that you experiment with these
- Additions before using them in real production work. Have fun!
-
- Each description includes a summary of the Addition’s function and instructions
- on its use.
-
- BASELINE SHIFT (Baseline.add) This Addition shifts a selected range of text
- characters a specified distance above or below current baseline. It does this by
- converting the characters to superscripts or subscripts and computing the
- percentage of the character’s point size needed to shift the characters the
- specified distance. •To use, select a character or string of characters with the
- text tool and then run the Addition. Enter the desired amount of baseline shift
- for the text. The nudge arrows add or subtract in fixed increments: nudge=1
- point, command+nudge= 5pts, option+nudge= .1 point. Once a character has been
- shifted, any change in the point size will affect the amount of baseline shift
- because the amount of shift is being computed as a percentage of the character’s
- point size. If a character’s point size has been changed and the original amount
- of baseline shift needs to be restored, select the character, and run the
- Addition. In the dialog box you will see the new amount of shift based on the
- new point size. Simply re-enter the desired amount of shift, choose “OK”, and
- the character will be moved to the desired location.
-
- BOX IT (boxit.add) This Addition creates frames around or boxes behind a
- selected image, graphic, or text block. •To use, select an image or EPS graphic
- with the pointer tool and run the Addition. Specify the standoff of the
- frame/box from the edge of the graphic. If “Use current settings” is selected,
- the Addition will draw a box using the current line weight, color, and fill
- defaults settings in your publication. “Use built-in settings” creates a box
- with a black .5 point line and a 10% fill. •NOTE: It is useful to remember that
- lines for PageMaker boxes build toward the inside—as you increase the line
- weight, the dimensions of the box or frame stay the same. Lines build inward
- from the outside edge of the box. This is in contrast to FreeHand lines which
- build from center of the line outward in both directions.
-
- CONTINUATION (Continue.add) This Addition creates “continued on page #” and
- “continued from page #” text blocks for PageMaker stories. •To use, select a
- text block with the pointer tool and run the Addition. The Addition dialog box
- will give you a choice of top (continued from page #) or bottom (continued on
- page #). Choose the appropriate option and the Addition looks for the page
- location of the previous or next text block as the case may be. The Addition
- then shrinks the text block by one line and places a new text block with the
- “continued” information in the newly created space. The Addition also creates
- new styles in your style palette called “Cont. from” and ”Cont. on.” To change
- the formatting of the “continued” text, just open up the styles and make your
- changes there, and all of the “continued” text blocks will be updated. •NOTE:
- The displaced line of text will be moved and your story will reflow, possibly
- changing its length and line breaks. If you change your layout, these
- “continued” text boxes are not updated automatically—you will need to delete
- them and run the Addition again. The quickest way to delete them may be to use
- Find/Change, selecting by style (“Cont. from” and “Cont. on”), and replacing the
- text with no string.
-
- DO MANY (Iterate.add) This Addition runs a selected script a specified number
- of times. •To use, select a script with the pointer tool and run the Addition.
-
- DO ONCE (Iterate.add) This Addition runs a selected script once without having
- to go through the Run script Addition selection dialog. •To use, select a script
- with the pointer tool and run the Addition.
-
- EDIT ALL STORIES (Edit stories.add) This Addition opens all the stories in your
- publication in the Story Editor at once. •To use, just run the Addition.
-
- FIND OVERSET TEXT (Overset.add) This Addition locates text that needs to be
- placed on your page. •To use, just run the Addition. If there is overset text in
- your publication, it will take you to a text block with the “text yet to be
- flowed” indicator triangle in the bottom windowshade handle.
-
- FLOW STORY (flowstory.add) This is a short-cut to autoflow a story. Run this
- Addition to flow a text block with text yet to be placed. •To use, run the
- Addition with a text block with a triangle indicator in the bottom windowshade
- handle selected. It will function like PageMaker’s autoflow command, looking for
- the next available text column on your page, and creating new pages if
- necessary.
-
- NUMBER PARAGRAPHS (numberparas.add) This Addition will insert consecutive
- numbers or a defined character and a tab at the beginning of paragraphs over a
- defined range in a given story. •To use, choose an insertion point with your
- text tool at the very beginning of the first paragraph you wish numbered, then
- run the Addition. When the dialog box appears, you will see options for
- specifying which paragraphs get numbered. You can number every paragraph in the
- entire story, just paragraphs assigned a specific style, or a specific number of
- paragraphs based on the location of your cursor. Instead of numbers, the
- Addition can also insert bullets or a character string at the beginning of your
- paragraphs. Just enter the string in the “Instead of numbers use...” box. NOTE:
- We recommend that you save your work before running this Addition. The Addition
- has no cancel or revert function of its own, and, in the event you accidently
- select Whole story instead of the range you really want altered, you can use
- PageMaker’s “Revert” command to undo the re-numbering.
-
- STORY INFO (storyinfo.add) This Addition displays information about a story:
- the file to which it is linked, number of text blocks in the story, a character
- count, the first and last pages on which the story appears, the number of
- overset or unplaced characters at the end of the story (if any), and the total
- area currently used by the story in inches. •To use, select a text block with
- the pointer tool and run the Addition.
-
- TEXTBLOCK INFO (textblockinfo.add) This Addition displays information about an
- individual text block: the file to which it is linked, its position in a series
- of linked text blocks, character count, area and depth, and the location of
- previous and next text blocks in the story. •To use, select a text block with
- the pointer tool and run the Addition.
-
- TRAVERSE TEXTBLOCKS (traversetextblocks.add) This Addition moves you to the
- first, last, previous, or next text block in a story. •To use, select a text
- block with the pointer tool and run the Addition.
